Hi everyone!
After picking up Dishonored 2 on sale and having it not run on my PC, I decided to start writing a short post every time I run into something like this and fix it so I can share what I find with everyone out there in the Interworld.
If you’re having problems with Dishonored 2, Bethesda recommends doing the following:
- Update your video card drivers.
- Ensure you have all of your Windows Updates.
- Verify the Steam cache.
If you’re like me, you’ve done all this, but the game still crashes. For me, the game crashed before the main menu. I reached out to Bethesda support not expecting much, but, to my surprise, they wrote back within a half hour with a fix which worked!
I’m currently using an i7-6700K Skylake CPU and 32GB of DDR4 running at 3400MHz with an ASUS GeForce GTX 1070 to run this game, so Bethesa suggested I use Nvidia GeForce Experience and force the game to run at a lower-than-native resolution (my native resolution is 2560×1440) and run in Windowed Mode. So, I used GeForce Experience to set the game to 1920×1080 in Borderless Window mode and, ta-da, it ran like a champ.
Cool, huh?
After a little more research, I’ve determined that the resolution does not seem to have any effect on the crash, however the game does not want to run in full-screen mode on my system. If you’re having a similar crash, try starting the game in Windowed Mode. That did the trick for me.
I’m hoping this might help others out there since I couldn’t find the solution. If you’re not running a Nvidia GPU and have problems loading Dishonored 2, let us know in the comments if you find a fix.
